SpaceX partners with Qualcomm for Starlink Mobile 5G network

SpaceX has entered into a multiyear agreement with Qualcomm to provide cellular infrastructure for its Starlink Mobile service. The partnership aims to build a nationwide 5G network in the United States by combining satellite connectivity with a massive ground-based terrestrial network.

Qualcomm will supply its Dragonwing cellular infrastructure, specifically the QRU100 radio-unit platforms and QDU100 distributed-unit processors, along with commercial-grade Layer 1 software. The network architecture will utilize Massive MIMO technology with 64 transmit and 64 receive paths to maximize coverage, capacity, and energy efficiency. Deployment of tens of thousands of terrestrial sites is expected to begin in 2027.

The hybrid network strategy is designed to challenge major US wireless carriers, including AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. While Starlink satellites provide coverage in remote or underserved areas, the Qualcomm-powered ground towers will handle high-density urban traffic. This move follows SpaceX’s previous acquisition of 800 MHz spectrum from EchoStar.
