AST SpaceMobile and SpaceX compete for $6B spectrum portfolio

AST SpaceMobile and SpaceX are competing for approximately $6 billion worth of spectrum licenses in the 800 MHz band. These licenses, part of a portfolio from Grain Management, could cover over 3,200 US counties and are considered essential for delivering satellite-based voice services directly to standard consumer smartphones.

AST SpaceMobile is facing several operational shifts. The company has announced plans for a $1 billion capital increase to fund development and alternative launch options. Additionally, a satellite launch originally scheduled for 2027 has been delayed following a rocket accident involving launch partner Blue Origin.

The FCC aims to conclude the bidding process by November 5, with binding offers due in the first week of September. While SpaceX has pursued a vertically integrated strategy through massive spectrum acquisitions, AST SpaceMobile utilizes a partner-driven model, working with major carriers such as AT&T and Verizon to provide connectivity.
