AST SpaceMobile develops satellite-to-smartphone network

AST SpaceMobile is developing a space-based cellular broadband network designed to connect directly with existing smartphones without the need for specialized equipment. The company has established commercial agreements with major telecommunications providers, including AT&T Corp, Verizon Communications, and Vodafone. Through partnerships with over 50 mobile network operators, the company aims to reach a potential user base of nearly 3 billion subscribers.

In its fiscal year 2025 annual report, AST SpaceMobile reported revenue of approximately $71 million, marking a 1,500% increase from the previous year. However, the company also reported a net loss of roughly $342 million as it continues to invest heavily in its orbital constellation. The company's free cash flow was nearly negative $1.1 billion.

For international investors, such as those in Canada, AST SpaceMobile offers exposure to the specialized communications and space industries via the Nasdaq exchange. This provides a way to diversify portfolios into sectors that may be less represented on domestic exchanges like the Toronto Stock Exchange.
