Astana AI Film Festival awards $450,000 Grand Prix to Latvia

The inaugural Astana AI Film Festival in Kazakhstan has concluded, marking a significant milestone for AI-generated cinema. The competition received 8,067 entries from 125 countries, making it one of the largest international contests of its kind.

Latvian filmmaker Nikolay Shestak won the Grand Prix and a $450,000 prize for his film ‘The First Honest Day’. The second-place award of $200,000 went to the Indian film ‘SITARA’, while the third-place prize of $100,000 was awarded to the Spanish production ‘Looking For Perseida’.

In local categories, Kazakh filmmaker Myrzakhan Zhumakhan won the Best Character award for the comedy ‘It Was Just a Joke’. The festival’s international jury included former UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and investor Balaji Srinivasan.

The total fund for the event was $2 million. While half was distributed as prizes, the remaining funds are designated to support emerging AI teams and the advancement of film production technology within Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev attended the festival's opening ceremony.
