Asthma peak season expected to increase pediatric hospitalizations

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has issued a warning regarding the upcoming ‘Asthma Peak Season.’ Data analysis from 2021 to 2025 indicates that pediatric asthma-related emergency department visits typically surge in September and October, continuing to rise into the winter months.

This seasonal increase coincides with students returning to school and exposure to respiratory infections such as the flu, RSV, and COVID-19. Factors such as poor indoor air quality and mold in school buildings are also noted as potential contributors to asthma flare-ups.

To manage the risks, health experts recommend that individuals with asthma maintain up-to-date vaccinations, ensure a sufficient supply of medication, and review Asthma Action Plans with healthcare providers. For children in school settings, an Asthma Action Plan is a critical tool that informs school staff about a child's specific symptoms, triggers, peak flow zones, and necessary care during flare-ups.
