Aston Martin F1 faces Honda engine reliability problems in 2026 season

Honda admitted that its 2026 power unit suffered significant performance and reliability issues that only became clear in January, after shakedown testing in Barcelona revealed vibration, battery and durability flaws. The problems have slowed development and forced the team to prioritise reliability over performance gains.

Aston Martin responded with a major chassis upgrade, introducing 16 component updates at the Hungarian Grand Prix, which helped the car climb the performance ladder and allowed Fernando Alonso to reach Q2 for the first time this season. Team principal Adrian Newey praised the progress and said the early‑season disaster has actually strengthened the working relationship with Honda, which plans to debut a remodified, more powerful unit at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Former driver David Coulthard forecast that the team could start winning races by 2028 if the development trajectory continues. Former Aston Martin technical director Otmar Szafnauer admitted he had underestimated the team's recent gains, while speculation surrounds Alonso’s future, with rumours that he may consider moves to Alpine or Williams if the package does not improve sufficiently.
