Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin future remains under speculation as team pledges his stay

Two‑time world champion Fernando Alonso has been at the centre of intense speculation during the 2026 Formula 1 season. Aston Martin’s performance has slumped, with the AMR26 and its new Honda power unit delivering only one championship point after seven races and leaving the team near the back of the grid. Rumours have linked Alonso with a possible return to Alpine or even retirement, while the Spanish driver says he will decide after the summer break, likely around the August races at Zandvoort and Monza.

Team officials have repeatedly insisted Alonso is “here to stay”. Track‑side chief Mike Krack told the media that Alonso will decide during the summer pause, that the team is happy with its drivers, and warned that “Fernando should not retire – he is too quick”. Krack also praised the drivers’ handling of a difficult season and expressed confidence in upcoming mid‑season upgrades. Alonso, for his part, defended Aston Martin against what he called “borderline abuse” on social media, emphasised his commitment to the project, and highlighted the hard work of the 1,000‑person team and Honda partnership.

Lance Stroll echoed the optimism, noting the team’s technical resources such as the new wind‑tunnel and simulator and insisting the project can still deliver victories. Across interviews in multiple languages, the consistent message is that while the car’s development is pending, both driver and team aim to remain together beyond 2026.
