Aston Martin faces comprehensive performance crisis in early 2026 F1 season

Aston Martin has endured a disastrous start to the 2026 Formula 1 campaign. In Monaco the team managed only a single point, earned by Fernando Alonso after a chaotic race, while both cars qualified at the back of the grid. At the following Barcelona Grand Prix both drivers again started from the rear, qualified four seconds off the pole pace and retired early, leaving the team without points.

Team officials admit the problems are widespread. Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack said, “I think it’s everything,” adding that the car is lagging on both circuits despite their very different characteristics. Drivers have labeled the package the “worst car” and “worst engine” on the grid. Former Haas boss Guenther Steiner called the situation “simply unacceptable” and warned that continued under‑performance could see the team relegated to a lower tier.

The chief causes identified are a Honda power‑unit deficit and a chassis that is not compensating for it. No major upgrade is expected until a large development package arrives at the Spa‑Francorchamps Grand Prix in mid‑July, meaning the team will likely continue to struggle through the summer. The lack of points has dropped Aston Martin to the bottom of the Constructors’ standings, intensifying pressure on owner Lawrence Stroll and chief engineer Adrian Newey.

Despite the bleak outlook, Krack highlighted a single positive – a flawless pit stop in Barcelona – and emphasised that each difficult weekend provides data that can help the team improve once the upgrades are introduced.
