Aston Martin's Hungarian GP upgrade narrows midfield gap

Aston Martin introduced a 16‑part B‑spec (XXL) upgrade package on the AMR26 at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix. The package, driven by Adrian Newey’s aerodynamic philosophy, features a narrower nose, re‑shaped front wing, revised floor and diffuser airflow, and a lighter chassis. The changes were aimed at increasing downforce in slow corners and stabilising the car’s aerodynamics.

The upgrade produced an immediate performance jump. Fernando Alonso reached Q2 and Lance Stroll finished 13th, allowing Aston Martin to overtake Cadillac and move ahead of Williams in the midfield. Former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley’s data analysis showed Alonso was significantly faster in low‑speed corners, confirming the aerodynamic gains, while the team still lagged on the straights due to a power‑unit deficit against the Mercedes‑powered Williams.

Honda supplied an upgraded power unit (ADUO) that was first tested in Hungary, promising roughly 30 extra horsepower and reduced vibration. The new engine is slated to debut at the Dutch Grand Prix, offering a potential remedy to the straight‑line shortfall. Team principal Mike Krack praised the upgrade as a solid step toward regaining competitiveness in the second half of the season.
