Aston Martin drivers face back-of-grid penalties in Azerbaijan
Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will start from the back of the grid at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix following significant power unit penalties. The FIA confirmed that the team opted to install new Honda components, exceeding the seasonal allocation.
Alonso faces a heavy penalty after receiving a new internal combustion engine, a new turbocharger, and additional ancillary components. Stroll is also penalized for installing a new turbocharger, battery, control electronics, and ancillary components. Due to the cumulative nature of the penalties, both drivers are relegated to the rear of the field.
In addition to the grid penalties, Aston Martin is introducing a technical evolution aimed at weight reduction. Operations Director Mike Krack noted that the team is working to bring the AMR26B closer to the minimum weight limit of 768 kg, describing the weight reduction as a “free performance gain.” However, the team continues to face challenges regarding power deficits and reliability issues.
