Aston Martin sells majority of non‑automotive brand rights to Authentic Brands in £550 million rescue

Aston Martin, facing severe financial pressure, has transferred 50.1% of the intellectual property that covers its non‑automotive products to Authentic Brands Group. The transaction, part of a £550 million financing package led by HPS Investment Partners, includes a £450 million secured loan and a £100 million optional credit line. The automotive and Formula 1 divisions remain under Aston Martin’s control, while the brand name for lifestyle and luxury goods moves to Authentic Brands.

Creditors holding roughly £1.3 billion of debt have issued a formal warning letter, arguing that the transfer of the brand’s most valuable asset may breach existing loan covenants and weaken their security. They are considering legal action to block the deal. The arrangement is further complicated by overlapping board memberships: Scott French, co‑founder of HPS Investment Partners, sits on the boards of both Aston Martin and Authentic Brands. The sale is intended to stabilise the company’s finances but has sparked controversy over using the brand name as a financial instrument.
