Aston Martin shows superior cornering speed in F1 analysis
GPS data analysis reveals that Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin demonstrated superior cornering speed compared to pole-position cars during the Sepang and Singapore Grand Prix weekends. While the team continues to face a deficit in straight-line top speed, the data suggests the AMR26 chassis, developed under Adrian Newey, is performing significantly better in non-full-throttle sections than qualifying positions indicate.
In Sepang, Alonso qualified 2.090 seconds behind Max Verstappen. However, GPS tracking showed a 2.238-second deficit during full-throttle segments, implying Alonso was 0.148 seconds faster in the rest of the lap. A similar trend appeared in Singapore, where Alonso was 0.370 seconds faster in cornering sections despite a 2.85-second gap to the pole position time.
The performance jump follows a major aerodynamic update package introduced in Hungary. While the team still struggles with power unit performance from Honda, the analysis highlights that the AMR26 is a highly competitive construction in technical sectors.
