Aston Martin F1 team aims comeback after dismal 2026 start

Aston Martin entered the 2026 Formula 1 season with a weak AMR26 chassis and a new Honda power‑unit that have struggled with performance and reliability, leaving the team with only a single point from the first eleven Grand Prix events.

At the Hungarian Grand Prix the team introduced a package of 16 upgrades designed by technical director Adrian Newey. The changes produced modest progress, with drivers Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso finishing 13th and 14th respectively, and Alonso scoring the team's only point of the season in Monaco.

Former driver David Coulthard, speaking on the Up to Speed podcast, predicted that Aston Martin will become a race‑winning team within two years, stating “they will be the biggest improving team … I predict they will win grands prix in the next two years.” Fernando Alonso echoed confidence in the project, saying “I have zero doubts that Adrian will provide the best car on the grid sooner or later.” Team owner Lawrence Stroll and senior staff such as Rob Smedley and Otmar Szafnauer have stressed the need for stability and psychological safety as the rebuild continues.
