Aston Martin's 2026 F1 Season: Early Troubles, Honda Engine Issues and Signs of Recovery

Aston Martin entered the 2026 Formula 1 season with high expectations but struggled from the start. The new AMR26 car lagged behind rivals, and the Honda power unit suffered reliability problems, including a battery failure caused by vibration during pre‑season testing in Barcelona. These issues left the team at the back of the grid, scoring only a single point in the first half of the year.

To address the setbacks, Honda reinforced its engineering staff, bringing back experienced F1 engineers and appointing Shintaro Orihara as chief engineer. The team reported progress in durability and energy‑management after months of intensive work. Meanwhile, team designer Adrian Newey acknowledged that the state‑of‑the‑art facilities at Silverstone would take time to translate into performance.

Former driver David Coulthard criticised the early results but remained optimistic, noting that upgrades were already being introduced. At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Aston Martin unveiled a significant package of upgrades that improved lap times by about two seconds, earning praise from former Haas boss Guenther Steiner, who said the team could no longer be criticised. The combination of technical upgrades and a more experienced Honda engineering crew suggests a potential turnaround for the remainder of the season.
