Aston Villa faces squad upheaval amid financial and regulatory pressures
Aston Villa is facing significant squad turnover this summer due to financial regulations and player departures. The club must comply with UEFA’s squad cost ratio (SCR), which limits spending on wages, transfers, and agent fees to 70% of football-related revenue. Villa has previously faced sanctions from UEFA for breaches of these financial rules.
In addition to the SCR, the club is navigating Premier League regulations. Recent player sales, including Jhon Duran, Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey, and Moussa Diaby, have generated substantial revenue, with the club expected to bank approximately £212m following the Ezri Konsa deal.
Beyond financial constraints, the club faces challenges regarding the Premier League’s homegrown player rule, which requires a minimum of eight homegrown players in a 25-man squad. With several key players potentially exiting, there are concerns that Villa may fall below this threshold, potentially necessitating the promotion of players from the reserve team to maintain compliance.
