Astorga officials raise concerns over Val de San Lorenzo biomethane plant

The Astorga City Council has reached a unified political position regarding a proposed biomethane plant in Val de San Lorenzo. The municipal government, including the PP, PSOE, and IU groups, approved a motion expressing concern over the project's potential impact on the city and the surrounding region.

The plant, promoted by Apiolae S.L., is designed to process 233,500 tons of waste annually and is currently undergoing environmental authorization. Local officials have raised questions regarding the origin of the waste, noting that only 48,000 tons would come from within a 30-kilometer radius, meaning approximately 185,500 tons would be transported from elsewhere.

Additional concerns include the logistics of waste transport routes and the management of the 103,061 tons of digestate produced each year, specifically regarding where and how this material will be applied to agricultural land.
