Astorga’s Astures vs Romans Festival Wins 40th Anniversary Victory

Astorga in León celebrated the 40th edition of its historic Astures and Romans festival, a reenactment that pits local Astur and Roman groups against each other in a series of athletic and skill contests held in the town’s bullring. Around 3,500 spectators watched the Astures, led by the caudillo Sebius, defeat the Romans with a decisive 18‑1 score, claiming victory in the majority of events. The celebration, organized by the Association of Astures and Romans and overseen by president David Gordón, also aims to obtain official recognition as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional before the end of the year. The festival’s growing popularity has turned it into a major tourist attraction, with full local hotels and media coverage, while the competition itself proceeds without incident and emphasizes community spirit and tradition.
