Astoria mural unveiled to honor slain FDNY EMS Captain Alison Russo

A new LED-lit mural was unveiled in Astoria, Queens, to honor FDNY EMS Captain Alison Russo. The memorial ceremony, held across from Fire Station 49, was attended by more than 40 FDNY and EMS officers along with Russo’s relatives.

Russo, a 9/11 first responder, was killed on September 29, 2022, during a random stabbing attack while on her lunch break. The assailant, Peter Zisopoulos, was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison in 2025.

The mural, created by artists Benny Guerra and Fernando Garcia, features Russo’s likeness above a banner reading “Never Forgotten Forever a Hero.” The installation is positioned to face the fire station, serving as a permanent tribute to her service.
