Astra Space seeks $250 million in funding to rebound

Astra Space is seeking to raise $250 million at a $1 billion valuation in a funding round expected to close this quarter, according to CEO Chris Kemp. The California-based company aims to transition into a broader “space platform company” by expanding its spacecraft propulsion business and its mobile-launch rocket program.

Following a period of financial difficulty and repeated launch failures, Astra was taken private in 2024 at a valuation of $11.25 million. This new fundraising effort follows an $80 million raise last year used to settle shareholder lawsuits and cover legal costs.

Unlike competitors such as SpaceX and Rocket Lab that focus on reusable rockets, Astra is prioritizing low-cost, expendable launch vehicles. The company is developing Rocket 4, a larger expendable vehicle with a projected launch price of $5 million, targeting launches beginning in 2027. Astra intends to offer military clients the ability to launch satellites rapidly from dispersed, mobile locations to reduce vulnerability to attacks.
