AstraZeneca and Bristol Myers Squibb in talks to form $400bn pharma giant

UK drugmaker AstraZeneca is exploring a merger with US rival Bristol Myers Squibb, according to the Financial Times. The proposed combination would be valued at nearly $400 billion, potentially creating one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical groups. The companies have been holding talks for several months, and a deal could materialise soon, though it may also be delayed or collapse.

AstraZeneca declined to comment on the talks, and Bristol Myers Squibb did not respond immediately. The British firm previously announced plans for a direct US listing while retaining its London listing, and its share price has more than quadrupled under CEO Pascal Soriot. Strong demand for cancer and rare‑disease drugs drives growth, with cancer treatments projected to generate about $25 billion in 2025 sales – roughly half of the company’s total forecast – and cardiovascular, renal and metabolism drugs expected to add about $12 billion. The potential deal follows a previous failed takeover attempt by Pfizer a dozen years ago.
