AstraZeneca announces $2bn Summit Therapeutics deal and Italian research investment

AstraZeneca has announced two major strategic initiatives involving significant financial investments. First, the company is investing $2 billion in Summit Therapeutics by purchasing newly issued convertible preferred stock. This deal, which values Summit’s common stock at approximately $18.36 per share, is expected to close by the end of the week. Upon conversion, AstraZeneca would hold rights to roughly 12% of Summit’s outstanding common stock. The investment is paired with a clinical collaboration to test Summit’s experimental drug, ivonescimab, in combination with AstraZeneca’s sonesitatug vedotin, specifically targeting gastrointestinal cancers. Both companies will retain full development and commercial rights to their respective medicines.

Separately, AstraZeneca is launching a 66.2 million euro research investment program in Italy over the next three years. This initiative is supported by 20 million euros in co-financing from the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy through the Tech and Biomedical Foundation. The program aims to involve over 200 research centers, institutes, and healthcare facilities across Italy to strengthen the national life sciences ecosystem and improve patient access to innovation.
