AstraZeneca opens $1B R&D facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts
AstraZeneca has opened a new global research and development (R&D) facility in Kendall Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. The 18-story, 570,000-square-foot building at 290 Binney Street features ten floors of interconnected laboratories designed to enhance scientific collaboration.
The facility utilizes advanced technologies, including robotics, continuous automation, and agentic artificial intelligence (AI), to support research workflows and improve laboratory efficiency. This new center will operate alongside the company’s existing genomic medicine facility at 100 Binney Street, together accommodating approximately 2,000 researchers and scientists.
As part of a broader US investment, AstraZeneca is committing over $1 billion to Massachusetts. This expansion is expected to increase the company’s local workforce by more than 50% in the coming years. Research at the site will focus on several therapeutic areas, including oncology, breast cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), metabolic diseases, obesity, and rare diseases, with additional focus on biologics and cell therapies.
