AstraZeneca's $300 M cell therapy plant highlights biopharma workforce gap

In 2025 AstraZeneca opened a $300 million commercial cell therapy facility in Rockville, Maryland. The 105,000‑square‑foot, all‑electric plant is designed for continuous operation of autologous T‑cell therapies and late‑stage oncology trials, targeting treatment for up to 4,000 patients a year. The facility earned the 2026 International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) Facility of the Year award in the “Social Impact — Unmet Medical Needs” category. Heather Francis, head of cell therapy manufacturing at AstraZeneca, said the company is “moving up the S‑curve,” emphasizing the need for skilled personnel to operate and innovate within advanced manufacturing environments.
