AstraZeneca's oral GLP‑1 drug elecoglipron cuts blood sugar and body weight in phase‑2 trials
Elecoglipron, an oral small‑molecule GLP‑1 receptor agonist developed by AstraZeneca, was evaluated in two phase‑2 studies. In the SOLSTICE trial involving 406 adults with type‑2 diabetes across nine countries, daily tablets lowered HbA1c by up to 1.9 percentage points and helped 72 % of participants lose at least 5 % of body weight, with some achieving up to a 7.7 % reduction. In the VISTA study of 310 adults with obesity or overweight across Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States, participants lost up to 11.8 % of body weight after 26 weeks of treatment, without the food‑or‑fluid restrictions required for existing GLP‑1 injections. Both trials reported safety profiles consistent with the drug class. Elecoglipron is not yet approved and AstraZeneca is moving it into phase‑3 testing, aiming for future market authorization.
