Astro Bot Rescue Mission arrives on Quest 3 via AI-assisted mod
The PlayStation VR exclusive platformer ‘Astro Bot Rescue Mission’ has been brought to Meta Quest 3 and PC VR through a new mod. Developed by modder Bigmak94, the project utilizes the open-source PlayStation 4 emulator shadPS4, which was modified with the assistance of the AI agent Claude.
Bigmak94 produced two distinct versions: a native standalone version for Quest 3 that can be sideloaded, and a PC VR version for streaming to various headsets. The mod includes features such as 6DOF headset tracking, native controller mapping, and immersive spatial audio. While the standalone Quest 3 build is considered fully playable, the device's mobile GPU is pushed to its limits, resulting in lower resolution and visual fidelity compared to the original PS4 hardware.
Users can utilize a PS5 DualSense controller as a substitute for the original PS4 controller, maintaining full functionality including motion sensors and rumble. The project highlights a growing trend in VR modding where AI tools are used to simplify complex processes like decompilation and code modification.
