Astro releases version 7 with Rust compiler to boost build speeds
The web framework Astro has released version 7, focusing heavily on improving build performance through a transition to native tooling. The update includes a compiler rewritten in Rust, replacing the previous Go implementation, and a new Rust-based pipeline for Markdown and MDX processing.
By utilizing Vite 8 and the Rolldown bundler, Astro reports build speed improvements ranging from 15% to 61%. For example, the framework's own build time decreased from approximately 62.70 seconds to 24.24 seconds. The new compiler uses oxc for parsing and Lightning CSS for scoping, and it introduces stricter HTML compilation rules.
Additional features in Astro 7 include advanced routing via src/fetch.ts, stabilized route caching for CDN providers such as Netlify, Vercel, and Cloudflare, and JSON logging support for AI coding agents. While the move to a Rust-based Markdown processor has drawn mixed reactions from developers regarding the shift away from the unified ecosystem, the core team has noted that the pipeline remains pluggable.
