Astrogate Labs to develop India’s first indigenous optical inter-satellite link

Astrogate Labs, an Indian deep-tech company, has announced the development of the country’s first indigenous Optical Inter-Satellite Link (OISL) terminal. The company aims to achieve flight readiness for this technology by 2027.

Unveiled at the Bengaluru Space Expo 2026, the announcement includes a demonstration of AstroLink Micro, a 10 Gbps laser communication terminal. This development marks the company’s expansion from satellite-to-ground communications into satellite-to-satellite connectivity, a critical component for future Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations.

Astrogate Labs is currently the only Indian company to supply indigenously developed satellite-to-ground laser communication terminals to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Its existing terminals have reached Technology Readiness Level 8, signifying they are qualified for flight. Additionally, the company has confirmed interoperability with international infrastructure through successful testing with the University of Western Australia’s TeraNet mobile optical ground station.
