Astrolab and HPE to launch AI and supercomputing mission to the Moon

The Griffin-1 mission, scheduled for launch in late 2026, aims to deploy high-performance computing and artificial intelligence to the lunar surface. The mission will utilize Astrolab’s FLIP robotic vehicle to carry a specialized computing module developed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE).

The Spaceborne Computer-4 is designed to be compact, lightweight, and fanless, featuring a low-power CPU, a GPU, and KIOXIA solid-state storage. To survive the Moon's extreme temperatures and vacuum, the unit will connect to the rover’s thermal system rather than using traditional cooling. It will rely on solar panels and batteries to manage power during lunar cycles, including nights that can exceed 150 hours.

If successful, the technology will allow for on-site image processing, navigation, and terrain mapping. This capability aims to reduce bandwidth limitations and latency by enabling vehicles to make faster decisions locally, decreasing reliance on Earth-based control centers.
