Astronaut health research focuses on cardiovascular strength for Mars missions

Research conducted on the International Space Station and through studies led by UT Southwestern Medical Center is providing critical insights into maintaining astronaut health during long-duration spaceflight. A study published in Circulation suggests that current exercise countermeasures are sufficient to prevent heart atrophy and maintain the cardiovascular function necessary to withstand the gravitational loads of a mission to Mars.

Simultaneously, the Expedition 75 crew is conducting advanced health technology tests in microgravity. These include the EchoFinder-2 study, which utilizes ultrasound, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence to allow astronauts to scan organs with minimal ground support. Other ongoing research involves immune system studies through blood sample analysis and the use of wearable sensors to monitor vital signs like blood pressure and heart rate during exercise. These advancements aim to enable medical autonomy for crews traveling further from Earth.
