Astronaut Jeremy Hansen announces retirement from Canadian Space Agency

Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, the first Canadian to travel beyond low Earth orbit during the Artemis II mission, has announced his retirement from the Canadian Space Agency. While appearing at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, Hansen expressed his intention to support the domestic space sector post-retirement, emphasizing its role as an economic pillar. The federal government estimated the space sector contributed $3.8 billion to Canada’s economy in 2024.

As the new lunar race intensifies among nations and private companies, concerns regarding space governance have emerged. The competition for lunar resources, such as water and helium-3, carries significant geopolitical weight. Experts warn that without strengthened international rules and a sense of “space citizenship,” the increase in satellites and space debris could lead to catastrophic collisions, threatening critical global connectivity used for weather, navigation, and disaster response.
