Astronomers challenge supernova expectations and dark energy theories
Astronomers have identified the star AT 2016blu, previously thought to be an imminent supernova, as a ‘supernova impostor.’ Located approximately 29 million light-years away, the massive star—roughly 33 times the mass of the Sun—has undergone 27 periodic outbursts since its discovery in 2012. New research led by Mojgan Aghakhanloo of the University of Virginia suggests these outbursts are not signs of a catastrophic explosion but are instead caused by a previously unseen companion in a binary system.
In a separate cosmological development, researchers from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the University of Oxford are challenging the widely accepted theory of cosmic acceleration driven by dark energy. By re-examining the Pantheon+ dataset, which includes observations of over 1,700 Type Ia supernovae, the team suggests that the evidence for acceleration may be weakened by factors such as the age of the progenitor stars. However, this conclusion remains a subject of debate, as other researchers continue to find evidence supporting an accelerating universe.
