Astronomers discover earliest proto-supercluster and study primordial helium

Astronomers have made significant discoveries regarding the early universe through two distinct studies published in The Astrophysical Journal.

An international research team led by Vandana Ramakrishnan has identified COSMOS-z3.1-A, the earliest and most distant proto-supercluster ever detected. Observed when the universe was approximately 2.1 billion years old, this massive structure possesses a mass 5,000 times that of the Milky Way. The discovery, which utilized data from the Dark Energy Camera at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile, provides insight into how large-scale cosmic structures and the cosmic web formed from chaotic, merging galaxy groupings.

In a separate study, researchers used data from the Large Binocular Telescope to analyze helium levels in metal-poor nebulas. By measuring helium signals in optical and infrared light, the team aimed to determine the universe’s primordial helium abundance. These findings support existing scientific theories regarding the elements and particles produced during the Big Bang and help clarify how ancient elements like carbon and nitrogen were dispersed in the early stages of cosmic evolution.
