Astronomers discover wandering black hole and unexpected blazar behavior

Astronomers have made significant discoveries regarding black holes through long-term observation and artificial intelligence. Researchers studying the blazar PKS 2155-304, located 1.5 billion light-years away, analyzed 20 years of data from NASA’s Swift and Fermi telescopes. The study revealed that the blazar’s radiation patterns do not follow standard theories; specifically, there was no clear long-term relationship between changes across different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, challenging the assumption that radiation comes from a single region of energetic electrons.

Separately, researchers at the University of Maryland used an artificial intelligence program to identify a dormant supermassive black hole located 30,000 light-years from its host galaxy's center. The black hole was detected after it performed a tidal disruption event, tearing apart a nearby star and creating a bright flash of light. This discovery supports theories regarding “wandering” black holes that have been displaced from galactic centers due to past galaxy mergers or collisions. The use of machine learning to identify these elusive, quiescent objects is expected to increase the frequency of such detections with upcoming surveys.
