Astronomers investigate potential existence of Planet Nine
Astronomers continue to investigate the hypothesis of a hidden ninth planet located in the far reaches of the Solar System. While no direct observation has been made, researchers suggest that the gravitational influence of an unknown massive body could explain unusual orbital patterns observed in smaller objects beyond Neptune.
Unlike early 20th-century searches for ‘Planet X’ which focused on the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, modern research analyzes the trajectories of distant, small bodies. These objects exhibit peculiar characteristics, such as orbital clustering, highly inclined orbits, and retrograde movements.
Konstantin Batygin of Caltech and Michael Brown, who proposed the hypothesis in 2016, maintain that current evidence remains compatible with the existence of Planet Nine. A 2024 study further reinforced this possibility by analyzing long-period objects whose trajectories cross Neptune’s orbit, suggesting their stability may be linked to a distant planetary presence.
