Astronomers observe massive gas outflows and cosmic lasers in the early universe
Astronomers using advanced telescopes have made significant discoveries regarding the behavior of galaxies in the early universe. Using the James Webb Space Telescope and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, researchers identified a young galaxy system known as CRISTAL-02. Located as it was 1.1 billion years after the Big Bang, the system is experiencing a massive outflow of cold gas. This ‘galaxy-killing wind’ is driven by energy from supernovae following intense star formation triggered by cosmic collisions, potentially explaining why many galaxies in the early universe appear ‘dead’ or quiescent.
In a separate discovery, the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa detected a record-breaking hydroxyl megamaser—a naturally occurring space laser—from a merging galaxy located over 8 billion light-years away. This observation provides a rare glimpse into the chaotic, highly active environments of the early universe, allowing scientists to study galaxy interactions as they occurred when the cosmos was less than half its current age.
