Astronomers observe massive star supernova and solar vortex
Astronomers have achieved significant observational milestones regarding stellar death and solar dynamics. Using the Chinese Einstein Probe, researchers tracked the explosive death of a massive Wolf-Rayet star, approximately 500 million light-years away. The observation captured a rare “shock breakout” phenomenon, where a shock wave from a core explosion breaches the star's outer layers. This Type Ic supernova, involving a star roughly 30 times the mass of the Sun, is believed to have left behind a black hole.
In a separate discovery, the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope has captured high-resolution images of a solar vortex on the Sun's surface. This phenomenon, caused by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability when plasma currents move at different velocities, provides new insights into how energy moves within the solar photosphere. The vortexes appear and disappear within seconds as plasma interacts with magnetic field lines.
