Astronomers observe rare real-time supernova shock breakout

Astronomers have captured a rare, real-time observation of a massive star's death through the supernova event SN 2026gzf. The observation began in March 2026 when China’s Einstein Probe satellite detected a brief X-ray flash from a galaxy approximately 500 million light-years away, signaling a shock breakout.

This phenomenon occurs when a collapsing stellar core sends a shockwave through the star's surface, releasing intense radiation. While such events are theoretically common, they typically last only seconds to hours, making them extremely difficult to catch. Following the initial alert, telescopes worldwide monitored the explosion as it rapidly brightened.

The event is scientifically significant because SN 2026gzf exhibited characteristics similar to supernovae that produce gamma-ray bursts, yet researchers found no evidence of the typical relativistic jets. This suggests that the ways massive stars die may be more diverse than previously understood, as jets may be smothered by surrounding stellar material or fail to form entirely.
