Astronomers release massive new cosmic datasets from eROSITA and SDSS-V

Major astronomical surveys are providing unprecedented views of the cosmos through new data releases. The eROSITA telescope, part of the Spektrum-RG mission, has published its second major data release (DR2), containing nearly two million X-ray sources. This includes approximately 64,000 extended objects such as galaxy clusters and supernovae. Researchers at Bonn's Argelander Institute utilized this data to study the galaxy cluster A3266, finding that the gas in its outskirts and connecting filaments is hotter and denser than current models predict.

Simultaneously, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey V (SDSS-V) has released Data Release 20 (DR20), which significantly expands the survey's reach by including the first optical spectra from the Southern Hemisphere. This release provides over three million spectra of stars and galaxies, alongside 18 value-added catalogs. By combining northern and southern observations, the survey offers a more comprehensive panoptic spectroscopic map of the universe, including data on black holes, stars, and interstellar gas.
