Astronomers study galaxy clusters and remnant radio galaxies

Astronomers are utilizing advanced telescope technology to study the evolution and structure of the universe. Observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 3827, located approximately 222 million light-years away, have been conducted as part of the Local Volume Complete Cluster Survey (LoVoCCS). This study uses weak gravitational lensing to measure mass and matter distributions within the cluster, which is situated near the center of the Great Attractor but is difficult to observe due to interstellar dust in the Zone of Avoidance.

In a separate finding regarding galactic life cycles, researchers have identified a population of remnant radio galaxies. By studying the XMM–Newton Large-Scale Structure field using the MeerKAT radio telescope, the Jansky Very Large Array, and the LOFAR network, scientists observed what occurs when the supermassive black hole engines powering radio galaxies stall. The study confirmed that 12 of 14 candidates are remnant galaxies where the central jets have switched off, causing the vast radio lobes of plasma to gradually fade as they lose energy.
