Van Gogh’s ‘The Starry Night’ may depict actual July 1889 sky
A multidisciplinary study published in Scientific Reports suggests that Vincent van Gogh’s iconic painting, ‘The Starry Night,’ may have been inspired by the actual night sky observed in the early hours of July 22, 1889, rather than being a purely imaginative creation.
A research team from South Korea, including scientists from Kyung Hee University and the space science company SLLAB, used forensic astronomy, geometric analysis, and historical weather records to reconstruct the celestial arrangement visible from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. Their findings indicate that the crescent Moon, the planet Venus, and the Hyades star cluster in the constellation Taurus were positioned in a manner that closely matches the composition of the masterpiece.
This discovery challenges the long-held art historical consensus that the painting was completed in June 1889, a date traditionally supported by letters Van Gogh wrote to his brother, Theo. Researchers noted that the lunar phase in June 1889—a waning gibbous—does not align with the thin crescent depicted in the work, whereas the lunar phase on July 22, 1889, provides a much closer match. While the study offers a compelling hypothesis for the observational source of the painting, experts caution that the work remains an artistic transformation and does not definitively establish the exact date of completion.
