Astronomy and calendar facts regarding August and equinoxes

The month of August, named after Emperor Augustus in 8 BCE to honor his military victories, is the eighth month of the Gregorian calendar. It is characterized by astronomical events such as the Perseid meteor shower and the Sturgeon Moon, which is named after the abundance of sturgeon in the North American Great Lakes during this period.

Astronomical shifts also include the equinoxes, occurring around March 20 and September 22 or 23. While the term equinox derives from Latin words meaning ‘equal night’, day and night are not perfectly equal in length due to Earth’s axial tilt. This tilt is the primary cause of seasonal changes and determines the Sun's path across the sky throughout the year.
