Astrophysicists localize the brightest radio burst ever recorded

Researchers have successfully identified the origin of a massive cosmic radio signal known as the ‘Brightest Radio Burst of All Time’ (RBFLOAT). Detected on March 16, 2025, the signal was so intense that detection systems initially mistook it for local radio frequency interference from nearby aircraft or mobile phones.

According to a study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, the burst released an amount of energy equivalent to what the Sun produces in four days. Unlike many previously detected Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) that repeat, RBFLOAT was a unique, non-repeating event. Despite its isolated nature, the research team managed to localize the source with unprecedented precision, marking the first time a non-repeating FRB has been accurately traced to its origin.
