Asturian cider gains recognition through Gijón competition and global awards

The cider culture in Asturias is receiving significant recognition through both local traditions and international accolades. In Gijón, the Association of Homemade Cider ‘El Culete Moyáu’ has launched the 2026 Homemade Cider Contest as part of Cider Week. The competition features 60 participants competing in a semifinal phase to select 12 finalists for a grand final in the Plaza Mayor. The event combines expert jury evaluation with public tasting and voting.

On the international stage, Llagares Valverán’s ‘Valverán 20 Manzanas’ has been named the best ice cider in the world at the World Cider Awards, receiving a gold medal. Produced by Masaveu Bodegas in Sariego, the product is made using a specialized process involving freezing at -20 degrees Celsius and a fermentation and aging period lasting nearly two years. The cider uses apples from the El Rebollar estate within the Protected Designation of Origin Sidra de Asturias.
