Asturian Mayors Call for More Guardia Civil in Summer Tourist Areas

The mayors of Ribadesella (Paulo García), Llanes (Enrique Riestra) and Cangas de Onís (José Manuel González) have jointly appealed to the Spanish government for an increased Guardia Civil presence in the eastern part of Asturias during the summer months. They argue that a single traffic patrol is insufficient to cover a territory of about 2,000 km² and a resident population of 50,000 that triples with tourists, leading to long response times and gaps in safety, traffic control, crime prevention and environmental monitoring. While the municipalities hire roughly thirty local police auxiliaries each season, they stress that only the Guardia Civil can perform the full range of duties required, and request a specific reinforcement of state resources for the peak period.
