Asturias and Cantabria announce 2027 salmon fishing regulations

The regional governments of Asturias and Cantabria have announced different regulatory measures for salmon fishing and the traditional ‘campanu’ practice for the 2027 season.

In Asturias, the government will implement a total ban on salmon fishing and suspend the ‘campanu’ auction in 2027. These decisions were made following requests from fishing associations to protect these strategic resources. The hiatus is intended to allow authorities to evaluate salmon populations and fishing dynamics to inform future management policies.

In contrast, Cantabria will not implement a total salmon fishing ban for 2027, making it the only community to allow the species to be caught. However, the regional government will introduce stricter regulations than the current year, including a maximum quota of five salmon per river (totaling 20 specimens) and limiting activity to three days per week. Cantabria will also suppress the commercialization of the ‘campanu’. Officials noted that while the species faces difficulties, juvenile sampling suggests a potential increase in reproductive salmon for the upcoming period.
