Asturias expands elderly care with new center and residential expansion
The Government of Asturias is expanding elderly care services in the eastern region, specifically in Panes, Peñamellera Baja. An investment of approximately 1.9 million euros is being directed toward a new residential and support center, which will add 15 public places for the elderly. The total project cost is estimated at nearly 3 million euros, funded largely by the Principality through European funds, with the remainder covered by the Peñamellera Baja City Council.
Separately, the regional administration has addressed the state of geriatric residential waiting lists. According to Nerea Monroy, the Counselor for Social Rights and Welfare, there are 3,645 people with recognized rights to a residential plaza. Of these, 2,649 are requesting immediate placement, while 996 have deferred their demand. To address these needs, the regional executive has pledged to create 1,025 new public network places by 2029.
