Asturias highlights its culinary heritage and natural landscapes

Asturias, a region in northern Spain, is recognized for its diverse natural landscapes and rich culinary heritage, particularly its variety of artisanal cheeses. The region features the Picos de Europa National Park and is home to over fifty artisanal cheese producers. While many varieties exist, including those made from sheep and goat milk, cow's milk accounts for approximately 65% of production.

A central highlight is the Cabrales cheese, a blue cheese with a Protected Designation of Origin. This cheese is naturally matured within the caves of the Picos de Europa, where specific humidity and cold air currents facilitate the development of its characteristic green and blue veins. In the town of Arenas de Cabrales, visitors can explore the Cueva Exposición del Queso de Cabrales, a museum located inside a real cave that details traditional pastoral life and the artisanal production process.

Beyond gastronomy, the region offers historical hiking opportunities, such as the Calzada Romana de Caoro. This 10-kilometer route follows an ancient Roman path used by shepherds to move livestock to high-altitude pastures, providing views of the Central Massif.
