Asturias implements environmental conservation projects in protected parks

The Government of Asturias has implemented several environmental conservation projects in protected natural areas using European funding.

In La Caballar, located near Sotres within the Picos de Europa National Park, over 43,000 euros from NextGenerationEU funds were used to restore more than three hectares of high-mountain grasslands. The work included brush clearing, hydrological-forest restoration, and habitat recovery to counteract the expansion of scrubland caused by reduced traditional livestock activity. Total investments in this sector, including improvements to livestock infrastructure, approach 78,000 euros.

Additionally, in the Ponga Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve, an investment of 158,000 euros was directed toward improving separate waste collection. The new infrastructure aims to better manage recyclable materials, improve landscape integration, and reduce risks associated with improper waste disposal. These actions are part of the Natural Network of Asturias (RENA) objectives to balance environmental conservation with rural service provision.
