Asturias launches research to remove microcontaminants from wastewater

The Consorcio de Aguas de Asturias (CADASA), in partnership with Acciona and the University of Oviedo, has launched an 18-month research project to improve the removal of emerging microcontaminants from wastewater.

These contaminants, which include pharmaceutical residues and personal care products, often bypass conventional purification systems. Their persistent presence in effluents poses risks to aquatic ecosystems. The research aims to develop methods that not only capture these substances but also destroy them, preventing the transfer of pollutants to other waste streams.

The project, funded with approximately 69,118 euros, focuses on the Caudal and Riosa river basins. Initial testing will target three specific substances: carbamazepine, benzotriazole, and metoprolol. The study also seeks to implement systems that allow for the reuse of materials used during the process to minimize resource consumption and waste generation.
