Asturias municipalities implement water restrictions due to drought

Municipalities in the Asturias region of Spain are implementing water conservation measures due to drought conditions and rising demand.

In Neda, Mayor Ángel Alvariño has issued an emergency decree prohibiting the use of municipal water for non-essential purposes, such as filling private swimming pools, washing vehicles, and irrigating gardens or ornamental spaces. The town is currently experiencing supply interruptions and pressure issues in certain areas. To mitigate the shortage, the local government has deployed a water tanker in Albarón and initiated the distribution of bottled water to affected residents. The service provider, Veolia, is working to restore the supply.

In Siero, local authorities are reducing municipal water usage by minimizing street cleaning and limiting the irrigation of public green spaces. This follows a warning from the Consorcio de Aguas de Asturias (Cadasa) regarding increased demand, which rose by 8.27% during the May-July period compared to previous years. Mayor Ángel García has called on residents and businesses to practice moderate consumption to avoid the potential activation of a formal emergency plan in the autumn.
